Global Maritime Regulatory System

Have you heard about Global Maritime Regulatory System. Let me explain to you..

1. Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)

In 1914, the first version of SOLAS was accepted as a response of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. It prescribed numbers of lifeboats and other emergency equipment along with safety procedures, including continuous radio watches. The 1914 treaty never entered into force due to the outbreak of World War I. New versions were adopted in 1929, 1948, 1960, 1974, 1988, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

SOLAS Regulation XI-1/7 took effect on October 1st, 2016. This regulation requires the carriage of an appropriate atmosphere testing instrument or instruments for enclosed space entry. These portable testing devices are not part of somebody’s personal protective safety equipment (PPE), but a part of the vessels equipment. They will be used to test enclosed spaces from the outside to make sure that they are safe to enter and will cover, as a minimum, the following gases: oxygen, flammable gases or vapours, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulphide. Suitable means should be provided to calibrate them.

2. International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL)

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is the main international convention covering prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships from operational or accidental causes.

The MARPOL Convention was adopted on 2 November 1973 at IMO. The Protocol of 1978 was adopted in response to a spate of tanker accidents in 1976-1977. As the 1973 MARPOL Convention had not yet entered into force, the 1978 MARPOL Protocol absorbed the parent Convention. The combined instrument entered into force on 2 October 1983. In 1997, a Protocol was adopted to amend the Convention and a new Annex VI was added which entered into force on 19 May 2005. MARPOL has been updated by amendments through the years.

The Convention includes regulations aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution from ships - both accidental pollution and that from routine operations - and currently includes six technical Annexes. Special Areas with strict controls on operational discharges are included in most Annexes.

3. STCW

source : Google image

What is STCW and who needs it?

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. It is a worldwide convention that ensures a lateral standard of training is achieved across all countries in the world. So for instance, if you're a Captain from Europe or America, you will have to undergo similar training in accordance with the STCW convention.

Who is STCW for?
Anyone wishing to work on commercial vessels that are over 24 metres long will have to obtain STCW qualifications/courses before they seek employment. The type of courses/qualifications you'll need will greatly depend on the position you're applying for and the post you'll be assigned to once you're on-board.

At the very minimum, you will need to obtain STCW Basic Safety Courses in order to apply to work on a ship. These courses can usually be completed within a week - during one block booking - at a designated STCW training centre.

The four basic STCW courses are as follows:

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities – This is a classroom-based course that focuses on teaching the essentials of basic safety.
BASIC Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting – This firefighting course covers both practical and theoretical situations that are taught by professional firefighters.
Personal Survival Techniques – A theory and practical course, you will be taught how to abandon ship using life rafts and also how to don life jackets correctly.
Elementary First Aid – A theory and practical course, during this session you will be taught vital basic 1st aid and life savings skills.
Proficiency in Security Awareness - This course is not normally part of basic STCW week; however it is a required course that you must complete prior going to sea. Normally, if you book onto the 4 mandatory courses listed above, your course supplier will include this one for free. It's a half day course that can easily be slotted into your training week, and is designed to explain how security systems work on board.

4. Maritime Labour Convention, 2006

Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), according to the ILO or International Labour Organisation, provides a broad perspective to the seafarer’s rights and fortification at work. The maritime regulation will finally enter into force on August 20th, 2013. Nearly 1.2 million seafarers will be affected by the terms and conditions of this human rights act, which will lay down a set of regulations for protection at work, living conditions, employment, health, social security and similar related issues.

On the basis of Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), the Seafarer’s Employment Contracts will be implemented and mandated against nullifying the present employment contracts. MLC will be similar to the other statutory certifications such as ISM and ISPS onboard ships and the certificate will have 5 years of validity with interim, initial and intermediate surveys. It is imperative for all seafarers to understand the importance of Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006.
Under MLC, 2006, the ship owners are required to submit a DMLC or Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance to their respective flag states which form a party to the convention. The flag states will accordingly issue the MLC Certificate to the fleet flying their flag following, surveys, inspections, paperwork and approvals. The certificate would be then required to be posted at a conspicuous position onboard.

My Inspired Leader

One of my favorite leader that inspired me is Lady Diana. This is her.

source : Google image
“Everyone needs to be valued, everyone has the potential to give something back.” – Lady Diana

Lady Diana grew up in an aristocratic family, clearly no stranger from networking at social gatherings with the elite upper class and having the attention drawn to her. All that was quickly put into perspective when she became Princess Diana of Wales after marrying Prince Charles in 1981. Lady Diana’s legacy reached far beyond Wales and continues to impact people to this day.

Lady Diana was an exemplary leader of being true to oneself. When put in a position of power she handled it with grace while maintaining all her core values and principles. Lady Diana was known for being one of the first British Monarch’s to adopt servant leadership style. This can be seen from her smallest acts of acknowledging people to charitable acts of global significance.

source : Google image

Diana maintained close contact with common-folk, breaking class norms especially for someone of her social ranking. At a time when AIDS was considered to be contagious through contact, she would go and spend time with those diagnosed with the condition in hospitals and at treatment centers and be photographed holding their hand to destroy the stigma. She was also a large advocate for homelessness aiding in destroying the stigma for that as well, a case that many in the royal family before her had never advocated for. Using her social status and power to change her country’s view on important social issues that were deemed undesirable for centuries, Diana was truly the people’s princess.
source : Google image
Lady Diana was thrust into the limelight immediately upon her marriage with Prince Charles. The public was fascinated with the matrimony. Nearly 600,000 people gathered in the streets to attend the wedding and another 750 million people watched on television. People quickly fell in love with Diana’s philanthropy, style and fact that she was unwilling to conform to the predetermined lifestyle of the Monarch. Diana was determined to raise her two children to be humble and use their power to better the lives of the peoplenot just let the predetermined social status carry them throughout their life.
source : Google image

Diana was a servant and then a leader, an advocate for the people. Upon her death in 1997 in Paris, 2.5 billion people watched her funeral on television. A statistic representing a fragment of the impact servant leadership can have on the united world.

“I think the biggest disease the world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved,” – Princess Diana

Organizational Goal (Staffing)

source : Google image

To have quality organization and to reach organizational goals, one factor that need to be considered is staffing. What is staffing actually?

Simple meaning would be provide staffs in organisation. But, how to ensure effective staffing?

Firstly, the process begin by identifying the unique core strengths on each individual team member, and then formulating a staffing approach to develop these capabilities as well as address any critical talent gaps.

Ways to do staffing in the most effective ways are :

Don’t just be an employer, be a coach.
source : Google image
Create an environment of coaching and mentoring. Ensure that managers at all levels know how to coach properly. Those with the most success are approachable and are active listeners. They are growth facilitators who guide employees as needed.

Align staffing with strategic business goals planning.
source : Google image
Your talent acquisition and management plan should align with your company vision, as well as the specific SMART goals outlined in your operational roadmap. As HR or talent manager, you should have a seat at the C-suite table as these strategies are developed.

Remember: SMART stands for “specific, measurable, achievable, realistic” and “timely.”

Make motivation, recognition and retention high priorities.
source : Google image
Prioritize employee recognition and the result will be a positive, productive, innovative organizational climate. Thank employees privately and publicly. You will encourage more of the behavior and thinking that make your business successful.

Optimize organization and productivity.
source : Google image
Continually review, reinvent and reinvest in the resources – including human capital – that will keep your company competitive and visible. List your short-term and long-term goals and time frames for meeting them. Invite input from involved personnel.

Streamline or outsource tasks to save time and money, and replace outdated processes and technology.

Promote team building.
source : Google image
Team building allows employees to experience a sense of accomplishment by working as a cohesive group to meet a challenging goal or complete a business-critical project. Barriers between individuals are broken, and relationships are cultivated. When they go back to their regular work, they’re ready and willing to help one another achieve both individual and organizational goals.

Pesta Air Putrajaya 2019

Apa-apa pun, pesta air putrajaya telah memberi pengalaman baru kepada saya dan semua. Tempat nya cantik dan sesuai.

Tips 101 on How to be a better person

Do you think to be a better person is easy? Actually it is. Let me share with you how to do it.

1. Don't hurt others.

It is your least intention to hurt others. No need to say unnecessary things and just let things be. Remember, as much as you want to say it out, some things are better left unsaid. But in contrary, if others said something hurtful to you, correct them if it isn't true and if it's true, bear with it. Stop overthinking.

2. Emphaty at its best

Emphaty is when you try to put your feet in others shoe. To consider others feelings. I'm not saying that you should totally abandon yourself while making decisions, but at least try to look things from different ways. It will give you new perspectives.

3. Set positive mind then the energy will come to you

This one, for me is a bit tough as I too often forget to set a positive mindset especially in the morning. But believe me, once you start to practice this good attitude, you will suddenly feel all the good vibes throughout the day. There's nothing to lose.

4. Don't stress

Don't stress over little things that would not matter 2 years from now. Some things are meant to be so be it. Remember, you could not control the world but you can control the way you accept reality. Be thankful that you get every chance to correct things and live life with full intentions.

5. Get rid of jealousy

Jealousy isn't healthy. Now I've got the trick on how to deal with jealousy. It is to accept ourselves as we are. Stop comparing and complaining. We have been blessed in so many ways in our life yet we tend to forget. That is why we face jealousy. We should know that God's plan is different so remove all the unsastified feelings towards others and be grateful dengan apa yang dikurniakan instead.

6. Practising gratitude

Everyone should do this. Practising gratitude will make you feel as the luckiest human being. It can be done on the smallest thing such as the food you've been served or having family and friends around. It helps to make you feel content by just being grateful and appreciate every little things in your daily life. This one is easy just be mindful when you are about to start complaining.
