As we know while the world keep on developing, a lot of trade involve with shipping industry. Hence the shipping industry must find a sustainable and viable way forward. Because shipping, as the most cost-effective way to transport the vast majority of international trade, will be central to sustainable global development and growth in the future.

A safe, secure, clean and efficient international shipping industry is indispensable to the modern world. And governments all over the world have an obligation to create a regulatory framework that allows that to happen.

IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, created by governments to enable them to do this. At IMO, the world's governments come together to turn that obligation into something more tangible. They turn it into a regulatory imperative.

In order to  provide and promote the highest standards of health, safety and environment protection IMO adopted four main pillars.

Purpose Of SOLAS Convention

The main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standard for the construction, equipment and operation of ships, compatible with their safety. Flag Sates are resresponsible for ensuring that ships under their flag comply with its requirements ,and a number of certifactes are prescribed in the Convention as proof that this has been done. Control provisions also allow Contracting Government to inspect ships of the other Contracting States if there are clear grounds for believing that the ships and its equipmen do not substancially comply with the requirements of the Convention - this procedure is known as part State control. The current SOLAS Convention includes Articles setting out generl obligations, amendements procedure and so on, followed by an Annex divided into 14 Chapter.

In June 2010 a diplomatic conference in Manila adopted a set of far-reaching and comprehensive amendments to the 1978 International Convention on Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers – known to us all more conveniently as the STCW Convention – and its associated Code. This instrument has been described as one for the four pillars of the global maritime regulatory system, along with two other IMO Conventions, SOLAS and MARPOL, and ILO’s Maritime Labour Convention. The amendments adopted mark the first major revision of the instrument since those adopted in 1995, which completely revised the original 1978 STCW Convention.
The shipping industry depends on competent, well-trained seafarers to ensure safety of life at sea, maritime security, efficiency of navigation and protection and preservation of the marine environment. The revised STCW Convention aims to provide the international standards necessary for training institutes and trainers to develop the much-needed skills and competencies for today’s seafarer .
The ITF has produced this guidance to help seafarers understand the revisions and locate the information that is of most relevance to them. I support this effort to make the Convention requirements accessible to all and trust that this guide will support the achievement of the objectives of the STCW Convention and Code.

3) MARPOL

MARPOL 73/78 is one of the most important international marine environmental conventions.  It is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, and is the international treaty regulating disposal of waste generated by the normal operation of vessels.  The original MARPOL Convention was signed on February 17, 1973, but did not come into force.  The current Convention is a combination of the 1973 Convention and the 1978 Protocol.  Therefore, the convention was formed a result of the combination of two treaties adopted in 1973 and 1978 respectively and thus the name MARPOL 73/78. (“MARPOL” is short for marine pollution and “73/78” is short for the years 1973 and 1978.) MARPOL 73/78 became effective on October 2, 1983.

MARPOL 73/78 aims to minimize pollution of the seas, including dumping, oil and exhaust pollution.  Its stated object is “to preserve the marine environment through the complete elimination of pollution by oil and other harmful substances and the minimization of accidental discharge of such substances.”

All countries that are signatories to MARPOL 73/78 are bound to follow its requirements, regardless of where their ships sail, and they are also responsible for vessels registered under their respective nationalities.

The Convention includes regulations aimed at preventing and minimizing pollution from ships – both accidental pollution and that from routine operations. MARPOL contains 20 Articles and 6 annexes.  The areas covered by each Annex is as follows:

Annex I – Regulations for the prevention of pollution by oil;
Annex II – Regulations for the control of pollution by noxious liquid substances in bulk;
Annex III – Prevention of pollution by harmful Substances Carried by Sea in Packaged Form;
Annex IV – Prevention of Pollution by Sewage from Ships;
Annex V – Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships; and
Annex VI – Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships

4) MLC

The MLC, 2006 was adopted by government, employer and worker representatives at a special ILO International Labour Conference, in February 2006, to provide international standards for the world’s first genuinely global industry. Widely known as the “seafarers’ bill of rights,” it is unique in its effect on both seafarers and quality ship owners.

The comprehensive Convention sets out in one place seafarers' rights to decent conditions of work on almost every aspect of their working and living conditions including, among others, minimum age, employment agreements, hours of work or rest, payment of wages, paid annual leave, repatriation at the end of contract, onboard medical care, the use of licensed private recruitment and placement services, accommodation, food and catering, health and safety protection and accident prevention and seafarers’ complaint handling.

It was designed to be applicable globally, easy to understand, readily updatable and uniformly enforced and will become the "fourth pillar" of the international regulatory regime for quality shipping, complementing the key Conventions of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) dealing with safety and security of ships and protection of the marine environment.

“This Convention shows how tripartite dialogue and international cooperation can combine constructively for the most globalized of industries to concretely address the challenges to securing decent working and living conditions for seafarers, while simultaneously helping to ensure fair competition for ship owners,” says Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, Director of the International Labour Standards Department of the ILO, which has steered the development, adoption and entry into force since the very beginning of the process.

How I Face Problems

 Hi there, today I'm back again to share with you all about how to face difficulties or problems. These are some strategy which worksout for me when I go through a problem.

1. Turn Towards Reality

When we are guided by the reality principle, we develop a deeper capacity to deal with life more effectively. What once was difficult is now easier. What once frightened us now feels familiar. Life becomes more manageable. And there’s something even deeper that we gain: Because we can see that we have grown stronger, we have greater confidence that we can grow even stronger still.

 2.Take Your Time

By being in a hurry, we actually thwart our own success. We get ahead of ourselves. We make more mistakes. We cut corners and pay for them later. We may learn the easy way but not necessarily the best way.Slow, disciplined, incremental growth is the kind of approach that leads to lasting change.

3. Practice Gratitude

It is easy to count our troubles rather than our blessings, but such an attitude undermines our ability to draw from the good that we have been given and to see our lives fundamentally as a gift. A change in perspective can make all the difference. Recognizing the good and receiving it with gratitude is a recipe for emotional health and well-being. This attitude enlarges the possibility that we can make use of the good we have been given and even use it to cope with the difficulties that we inevitably inherit.

4.Stay Close to Your Feelings, Even the Painful Ones

Often we find our feelings scary, heavy, and confusing, so we try to keep them at a distance. But we need our feelings in order to find satisfaction, meaning, and pleasure in life. Getting rid of feelings not only backfires but it also drains us of the psychological energy that makes life worth living.

This are some simpler steps I follow to overcome problems I face in life and by writing this down in my blog I hope that it helps you too.

Global Maritime Regulatory System

Hi everyone, as it has been long since i uploaded a blog,today I would decided to post on something which is very important for us seafarers.The global maritime regulatory system consists of four main pillars such as Marine labour convention (MLC),International convention on standards of training,certification and watchkeeping for seafarers (STCW), MARPOL 73/78 and Internationl convention for safety of life at sea (SOLAS).I would to do a brief blog about these system today.These four pillars are under one roof organization called International maritime organization (IMO).

No matter in which career we are in, safety of workers are important, therefore there is this international convention for the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) which is an international maritime treaty which sets minimum safety standards in the construction,equipment and operation of merchant ships.The convention requires signatory flag states to ensure that ships flagged by them comply with at least these standards.The current version of SOLAS is the 1974 version,known as SOLAS 1974,which came into force on25th May 1980.

Not only safety for life of seafarers but there is also a convention made for the sea which is known as MARPOL 73/78. It is the main international convention aimed at the prevention of pollution from ships caused by operational or accidental causes.It was adopted at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1973.The protocol of 1978 was adopted in response to the number of tanker accidents in 1976-1977.The original MARPOL was signed on 17 February 1973,but did not come into force at the signing date.The current convention is a combination of 1973 convention and the 1978 protocol ,which entered into force on 2 October 1983.

Despite that, International convention on standards of training,certification and watchkeeping for seafarers STCW which sets minimum qualification standards for masters,officers and watch personal on seagoing merchant ships and large yachts .STCW was adopted in 1978 by conference at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) convention in London,and entered into force in 1984.The convention was significantly amended in 1995.

Last but not least,maritime labour convention (MLC) is an international labour organization convention , number 186,established in 2006 as the fourth pillar of maritime law and embodies '" all up-to-date standards of existing international maritime labour conventions and recommendations , as well as the fundamental principles to be found in other pillars such as SOLAS,MARPOL and STCW.The treaties applies to all ships entering the harbours of parties to the treaty (port states), as well to all states flying the flag of the state party (flag states).This convention was drafted on 7th February 2006 and signed on 23rd February 2006 in Geneva which was in effective 20 august 2013 onwards.

 HOW YOU REACT WHEN FACING DIFFICULTIES OR PROBLEMS

Difficulties or problems are defined as the quality or state of being hard to do, deal with, or understand. Admit it, we all face some sort of challenges in life, whether it’s a temporary failure in business, or loss of a job, or a current relationship that’s leading to divorce. As humans, we often tend to take action best when we think things are certain and to ensure that it works, we plan every detail of the process. But at some point, life may deal us a huge, disappointing blow. Well, I'm here to some simple ways to deal with it.

1. Be solution driven

This means that each time you face challenges or any problems, you should start thinking about the solution to such challenges or problems. Don’t be filled with the negativity the problems bring, but ask yourself instead how can I solve this? When you figure it out, don’t waste time and take immediate action to solve such problems.

2. Keep moving forward

The final thing you need to do is to keep moving forward no matter what the problem is. Do not stay stuck, do not slow down because when you slow down these challenges will eventually bring in new ones. Moving forward could be reading a positive book to learn more about the problem and how to solve it. It could be taking necessary action in finding a mentor and just doing everything you can to keep taking that step forward. Understanding that the problem at hand is not something new, however other people have experienced it and won over such a situation and the fact that they did means you can also overcome.

3. Don’t take it personally

Most people can easily become self-depressed in the midst of challenges because most of the time they simply keep it to themselves, thinking they can fight it alone. This can create all manner of problems when they discover they can’t get through it alone. Don’t be one of them. When you face challenges, learn how to share it with someone you trust and do not forsake good counsel. You don’t have to go through it alone, and a problem shared is a problem halved.

4. Have faith in yourself. 

Being negative and dwelling on your problems isn’t constructive. Have faith in yourself and your ability to deal with your problems in a constructive way, which can help you more effectively deal with them. Use your past victories to help inspire and bolster your strength in times of trouble.
Give yourself a chance to focus on what is positive in your life. This may put your problems in perspective and show you that you can deal with any challenge life throws at you.
Say a positive affirmation to yourself. For example, “I know I have a problem with my grades overall, but I am really good at chemistry class. I can apply my skills from that class to my other ones.”
Surround yourself with individuals who also have faith in your abilities and bolster your willingness to solve problems quickly and effectively.

WAYS TO FACE PROBLEMS IN LIFE

As we all know, there's no individuals without problems in their life. Each and everyone of us have to overcome problems to get our lives get moving. Having problems in your life can feel overwhelming and it may be that the last thing you want to do is to face them. 

There's few ways of me facing problems in life: 

1) Acknowledge the problem

This should be our first concern. Get to know what kind of problem is that. Check whether how it is affecting us. All you need to do is sit and and think of the problem first. Find out the source of the problem.

2) Accept it

When you encounter problem, don't just blame others. Accept as how it is. Acceptance is very important. When you accept the problem, it may help in pressuring too much by just thinking of the problem. 

3) Ask for help

Problems may be solved easily when you have someone helping you. So yeah, don't be shy in getting help. Different people have different opinions and views. It surely may be the help you really need. Try having a slow talk about it to your family and friends. I bet they will surely help you to get rid of the problem. 

4) Try breaking a problem into smaller pieces

Solving a problem may sometimes be overwhelming and hard. To decrease anxiety and break down the problem, break the problems down so that you can think more clearly. Identify the different parts it consists of. Then figure out practicable solution for each of these parts. Now, you could solve it easily and save time.
