The Bridge is actually named for the GOLDEN GATE STRAIT,the narrow entrance between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay.The strait was named by explorer and U.S.ARMY officer,who marveled at its beauty in 1846 two years before the discovery of gold in California

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one mile wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the American city of San Francisco, California the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula.
