INFLUENCE MANAGEMENT

Influence is everywhere: we’re in the middle of an election that shows the best and the worst. Have it, talented people, enjoy the show. Meanwhile where I’m sitting, it’s a game-changing year in talent management, too.
In
order to be successful, Harvey Golub, the former CEO of American Express,
always said, you need to have the expertness of influence
management. Whether you are a manager or not, influence management
always plays an important role which is a basic competency that everyone
needs.

Influence is simply the key to get your job
done in an organization. Nobody has the formal authority to achieve what
is necessary , not even with those who report to them. It's an illusion that once managers could
make their direct reports do whatever they needed. Managers have never had a lot of
authority. Organizational life is far too
complicated to do that.
Managers do this through schedules,
planning, procedures, activities, measures, and so on, but they must also
direct people and monitor their efficiency, and you cannot manage people
exclusively by command-and-control techniques. The people mentioned above are
human beings, not robots, mechanical parts or assembly lines. We react well when they are handled like
a human being so that they do stuff and deliver a successful outcome when they
have a say on how to do the job and get involved in the work where they feel
respected, supported, well educated, and cared for.

Leaders lead by mobilizing people around
a common vision of the future, by encouraging them to pursue the leader's
footsteps. We show people what is feasible and inspire them to make these
possibilities true. We energize and motivate people in ways that satisfy their
aspirations, give them a sense of meaning, and leave them with a deep sense of
accomplishment when the work is done. Leaders lead by modelling ways of
thinking or behaving and by encouraging new ways of looking at things, and by
doing so, they give people the confidence and the courage to make these new
ways their own. The best leaders are coaches, advisors, and role models — and
they do the vast majority of their work by power, not authority.
The concept of influence management
is easy. . . the process is complicated.
Thus, influence is known to be a major
role to be played when it comes to management. A proper measure has to be taken
so that to accomplish the goals which we desire for.
