Manchester United or in abbreviation, Man United was first formed in the year 1878 and was first named as Newton Heath LYR - ( Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway ). The Man United team at that time was made up of railway workers of certain department playing against workers of other departments or other railway workers. When the football league started in 1888, newton Heath did not join as they thought they weren't good enough to be in such a league. However, they waited till 1892 and made their first entrance in the league and played as Division One League players. Newton Heath only managed to keep themselves in the top flight for two years and unfortunately got relegated to Division Two the following year. Due to many financial problems later on, the club was close to extinction but was however saved by a local brewery owner, John Henry Davies. Davies then invested in the club and this led to a change of club name. Certain names such as Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were rejected by Davies however one name did get his attention. Manchester United was born in the month of May 1902.

Davies continued to build the club and paying it all by himself for the workmanship in 1908. By the year 1910, United have moved all their necessaries and belongings from their old home in Bank Street to their new home and stadium called Old Trafford. Their first home game at Old Trafford was played on 19th February 1910 and managed to beat their rivals Liverpool 4-3. Old Trafford had managed to successfully accommodate an 80,000 capacity crowd. Upon completion of their first season in Old Trafford, Man United became Champions for the second time after beating Sunderland 5-1 at home. During that same season, Man United had also beaten Swindon Town 8-4 to clinch the Charity Shield title.

The winning spirit however did not last forever at Manchester United, as they became to decline from the 1920's straight up till the 1930's. They had their first trashing of 12 matches straight win no win including a massive defeat of 6-0 to Huddersfield Town and 7-4 to Newcastle United. The Reds eventually lost 27 out of 42 league matches conceding 115 goals. This continuous defeat caused united to lose their place in the Division and hence getting relegated. The club not only got relegated but also got their manager for that season to be sacked. The clubs savior then arrived at old Trafford and paid 30,000 to buy new players. His name was James Gibson and was a manufacturer of army uniforms. He also appointed their new manager Scott Duncan who was given the money to spend. However he did not make the most of it. United's dreadful run almost caused them to be relegated into the third division and was only saved by a win on the last day of the season with a score of 2-0.
During the Second World War, on 11th March 1941, the stadium was bombed by a German air raid destroying the main stand, dressing rooms and offices. However sorrow did not last in United for long, as there was a shine of brightness and it came with a man named Matt Busby, who proved that he was a huge important figure in the Manchester United history. Busby was a former Manchester City and Liverpool player. Although having played for both the teams that were rivals to United, Busby joined the Reds in 1945 on a five year contract and couldn't believe he was still managing the club 25 years later. Busby's mix of players helped build the team to glory and the team became capable of challenging for domestic honours. United managed to finish at second place of the league after the war during the 1946/47 season and was the highest placing they have reached after 36 years. They also managed to lift their first trophy the following year after beating Blackpool in the 1948 FA Cup Final and it was 39 years to that day since United previously won their last cup. United continued their winning streak with Busby's men and this brought the fans flooding back causing to pull United out of debt.

United's reign did not last long as after refueling at Munich on the 6th of February 1958, United's plane crashed killing 22 people. After the devastating happening, Busby pulled out a team that could just help them finish second in the league but unfortunately lost in the FA Cup final. Matt Busby then continued to build his team and fortunately bought two players which then turned out to be two of the best players in Manchester united history namely, Bobby Carlton and George Best. The re-built Manchester United came thrashing into the league and continued till they secured winning their first Football League Championship. They didn't stop there for that season as they continued winning and won their first European Cup. Matt Busby then achieved his title as Sir Matt Busby for his effort of managing the club and their winning of the trophies. However with memories of the European Cup triumph beginning to fade, Manchester United's attentions turned to managerial vacancy. Sir Matt Busby had led the club to the promised land but now had to retire, leaving big boots to fill.
